- Disconnect battery.
- Disconnect the ignition wires from the distributor cap, or unscrew the distributor cap. It is better to unscrew the cover without disconnecting the wires going to the spark plugs.
- Disconnect the cable connector on the distributor side; On a carburetor engine, disconnect the vacuum hose.
- Rotate the crankshaft of the engine to install the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke and use a scriber to mark the position of the slider nose on the outer edge of the distributor housing.
- Unscrew the distributor and remove it from the cylinder head - the valves should have clearance. In this engine position, check the position of the camshaft drive spline. It differs on both engine types. If the camshaft position corresponds to Figures 148 or 149, the piston is set to the compression TDC position.

- Place a new O-ring on the ignition distributor and insert the ignition distributor until the distributor axis is installed as follows:
- on a 1.6 liter engine, turn the distributor until the protrusion in the distributor body coincides with the groove on the driver, as can be seen from Figure 150.
Pic. 150. Correct position of the ignition distributor axis in relation to the distributor body when installing the ignition distributor on a 1.6 liter engine.
— on a 2.0 liter engine, turn the distributor until the cutout in the driver matches the line marked on the distributor body.
- Insert the ignition distributor and check that the distributor slider is facing the mark on the edge of the distributor housing. Turn the distributor until the middle of the flange aligns with the threaded hole in the cylinder head. Insert the bolt and temporarily tighten the hook so that when adjusting the ignition timing there is a margin of adjustment in both directions, that is, so that if necessary, you can turn the ignition distributor in both directions.
- Connect all wires and vacuum hose (if available) to the ignition distributor.
- Finally, check the ignition timing as described in Chapter 7.2.
