The ignition timing is adjusted at idle speed. The idle speed and ignition timing values are contained in the size and adjustment tables. The gearbox, regardless of design, must be set in neutral. The crankshaft pulley has a notch on the edge, which, when adjusted correctly, should match the mark on the ignition adjustment scale. The adjustment is different for all engines.
Engine 1.6 l
- Warm up the engine to operating temperature and connect the speed meter in accordance with the manufacturer's operating instructions.
- On a petrol injection engine, disconnect the connector shown in Figure 151 and short-circuit terminals "T" and "E1".

- On a carbureted engine, disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor diaphragm and seal the end of the hose appropriately.
- On a carburetor engine with a catalytic converter, set the octane corrector to the correct position. To do this, remove the cap and set the button on the distributor to the SUPER position (red mark) (Fig. 152). Reinstall the cap. With this octane setting, you should refuel with unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 95 or higher. If the octane switch is switched to the blue mark (normal gasoline), you should use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 or higher.

- Connect the stroboscope according to the manufacturer's operating instructions and point the light beam at the edge of the crankshaft pulley.
- With the engine idling, check whether the notch on the pulley matches the corresponding division on the scale on the timing cover (Fig. 153).

- On a carburetor engine, connect the vacuum hose to the ignition distributor. Check the ignition timing again. With the vacuum hose connected, the ignition timing angle should be 12-18°. The radiator fan should not turn on.
- If adjustments are required, loosen the distributor bolt and turn the distributor.
- Tighten the bolt and check the ignition timing again.
- On an injection engine, remove the jumper and connect the connector.
Engine 2.0 l
- Warm up the engine to operating temperature and connect the speed meter in accordance with the manufacturer's operating instructions.
- As shown in Figure 144, short-circuit the terminals to complete the circuit.
- Let the engine idle (automatic transmission gear selector in position "N"), connect the stroboscope in accordance with the manufacturer's operating instructions and direct the light beam to the edge of the crankshaft pulley, as shown in Figure 153. If the mark is difficult to see, draw a line on the cut with chalk and check the ignition timing again.
- If the ignition timing does not correspond to the values given in the table of dimensions and adjustments, loosen the two distributor screws and turn the distributor. By lightly tapping the screwdriver handle, you can turn the distributor in small portions.
- Tighten the ignition distributor and check the ignition timing again as described above.
- Remove the jumper from terminals "E1" and "T" and close the cover.
- Start the engine again and check the ignition timing again. It should now be 14–19° before TDC. The radiator fan should not turn on. With the catalytic converter installed, the ignition timing should be 13–22°. Both values are given for the engine running at idle speed.
