Warning! Remember that the dust generated during the operation of the brake mechanisms may contain asbestos, which is extremely harmful to human health. Never blow off dust with compressed air or inhale it; when servicing mechanisms, wear a protective mask or respirator. Never use gasoline or petroleum-based solvents to clean brake system components, use only branded cleaners or methyl alcohol!
Note. Both brake calipers on the same axle must be changed at the same time. Remember that remanufactured brake caliper assemblies can always be ordered from Toyota Authorized Service Stations on an exchange basis.
Details of the installation of brake calipers are shown in the illustrations Installation details of the front brake pads and caliper and Details of installation of rear brake pads and caliper.
1. Loosen the front wheel nuts. Jack up the front of the car and place it on jack stands. Set the parking brake/chock the wheels on the ground. Remove wheels.
2. Pump out approximately 2/3 of the brake fluid from the GTZ reservoir; when the pistons are pressed, the fluid level may begin to be forced out of the reservoir. Place a drain container under the brake mechanism assembly and treat the surface of the latter with a special cleaner. Place a drain pan under the assembly of the appropriate brake mechanism and thoroughly wash the surface of the latter with a special cleaner.
3. Give the union nut and disconnect the brake line from the caliper (refer to accompanying illustration).
4. Turn out bolts of fastening of a support (refer to accompanying illustration). If the caliper cannot be removed from the brake disc, therefore, the pads cling to the shoulder formed at the wear boundary of the disc, remove the pads (see Section Replacement of brake pads).
5. If the removed caliper is to be reused, thoroughly wash it in a special cleaning liquid, in no case use kerosene and other petroleum products to wash the components of the brake mechanism! Carefully check the condition of the caliper, if necessary, replace it.
6. Establish a support on the regular place and tighten fixing bolts with the demanded effort.
7. Connect the brake hose to the caliper (don't forget to replace the sealing washers). Tighten the union nut firmly.
8. If the brake hose was disconnected, bleed the corresponding brake circuit (see Section Bleeding the brake system).
9. Replace the wheels, lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel nuts to the required torque (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance). Before starting the operation of the vehicle, make sure that the braking system is working properly.
