Cardan shaft, gearbox and axles — general information [Toyota Land Cruiser J60]

The cars are equipped with 2 cardan shafts (front and back), which transmit torque from the transfer case to the gearboxes of the rear and front axles. The shafts are equipped with 2 cardan fork joints. The cardan shafts are balanced and must be installed exactly in the original position during assembly.

The front and rear axles are designed as bridges in which gearboxes and half-shafts are mounted. The rear axle half-shafts are semi-unloaded or fully unloaded (depending on the model and year of manufacture of the car), the front axle half-shafts are of a fully unloaded type.



Fully unloaded axle shafts are easily distinguished from semi-unloaded axle shafts by the crown of the hub mounting bolts.

Any work on disassembling and assembling the gearbox is carried out in a car service center.
