2. Connect the tachometer. Connect the tachometer tester probe to the "IG" (-) terminal of the diagnostic connector.
Note:
- Never allow the tachometer lead to touch ground as this may cause damage to the commutator and/or ignition coil.
- Some tachometers are not compatible with this ignition system, so check the compatibility of your unit before use.
3. Check and adjust the ignition timing.
a) Using a jumper, short-circuit the "TE1" and "E1" terminals of the diagnostic connector.
b) Check the engine operation at idle speed.
c) Connect the stroboscope and check the ignition timing angle.
- The ignition advance angle at idle speed is 8-12° before TDC (with terminals "TE1" and "E1" closed).
d) If necessary, adjust the ignition timing by turning the distributor housing, loosening its mounting bolts.
d) Tighten the bolts and recheck the ignition timing.
e) Remove the jumper from the diagnostic connector.
4. Recheck the ignition timing angle.
Ignition timing at idle:
4A-FE, 7A-FE, 3S-FE
- 4S-FE — 10-20° before TDC
- 5A-FE — 5-15° before TDC
5. Remove the tachometer and stroboscope.
