Removing
With the car standing on the ground, give the wheel nuts.
Mark with paint the position of the wheel discs relative to the hubs. Thanks to this, balanced wheels can be put in their original places.
Raise the front of the car.
Remove wheel.
Support the front suspension at the control arm to prevent sagging of the drive shafts after the suspension strut has been removed. To do this, install a suitable support or hydraulic jack.
Disconnect the brake hose at the brake caliper.
Attention: Place a container to collect the escaping brake fluid. Observe rules for handling brake fluid,.
Remove the brake hose bracket from the suspension strut.
Disconnect the brake hose from the connection.
Vehicles up to 4/87: Mark with paint the position of the adjusting eccentric to be set in the same position during assembly. With the help of the specified eccentric, the camber is adjusted.
Unscrew the two bolts and remove the steering knuckle from the suspension strut.
Loosen upper suspension strut nuts (The arrow in fig. G-3606) and remove the stand. Be careful not to damage the protective boot of the front wheel drive shaft. For this, wrap the cover with a rag.
Caution: Never loosen nut 1, as it tightens the suspension strut spring.
Installation
Install the suspension strut from below so that it is in the middle of the upper support. Screw three nuts onto the rack mounting bolts. Tighten the nuts with a torque wrench with the following torques: - cars up to 4/87 of release - 17 Nm; cars from 5/87 of release - 40 Nm.
Bolt the steering knuckle to the strut.
Attention: Install both bolts at the rear, i.e. the nuts must be at the front in the direction of travel. Screw nuts on by hand without tightening.
Cars up to 4/87 of release: Set the adjusting eccentrics according to the marking.
Tighten the steering knuckle nuts to 260 Nm.
Caution: The tightening torque is very high. Make sure that the wrench is horizontal to prevent the vehicle from slipping off the supports.
Attach the brake hose to the suspension strut.
Connect the brake hose to the brake caliper, tightening it to 30 Nm.
Attention: Guide the pin of the brake hose into the hole on the brake caliper.
Fit the lock nut onto the brake hose.
Bleed the brake system.
Install and fasten the wheel with nuts, observing the markings. Lower the vehicle on the lift and tighten the wheel nuts crosswise to 105 Nm.
Measure the geometrical parameters of the running gear. Perform the operation as soon as possible. If necessary adjust wheel camber.
