The speed can be kept up or down within the engine specification, although a slight change in speed may occur when upshifting or downshifting. On steep slopes, a greater change in speed may occur, so it is better to drive the car without resorting to the cruise control.
Note. For maximum vehicle control, do not use the cruise control when driving in heavy traffic or changing traffic conditions or on slippery (wet, covered with ice or snow) roads and in strong winds. Avoid speeding up when driving downhill. If vehicle speed is too fast, disengage cruise control and downshift to use engine braking to slow down.
Turning the system on and off
To control the tempostat, press the button «CRUISE ON OFF». At the same time, a lit control lamp on the dashboard will show that the desired vehicle speed can now be set. The second press will turn off the system completely.
Note. To prevent accidental activation of the tempostat, hold the switch «CRUISE ON OFF» off if you are not using the tempostat.
Choice of cruising speed
1. Accelerate the vehicle to the desired speed, push the control down towards «SET/COAST» and release it, then the selected speed mode will be automatically maintained by the tempostat.
2. If the speed is not satisfactory, move the lever up for a faster speed or move it down for a slower speed. Each push-up changes the speed setting by 1.6 km/h. After setting the speed, you can take your foot off the accelerator pedal.
3. If you need to accelerate, such as when overtaking, depress the accelerator pedal hard enough to exceed the set speed. If you release the pedal, the vehicle will return to the speed set before the acceleration was performed.
Cancel the selected speed mode
1. You can cancel the selected speed mode by pressing the brake pedal, or by pulling the lever in the direction «CANCEL» and letting him go.
2. If the vehicle speed drops below 40 km/h, the selected speed mode will be automatically cancelled.
3. If the vehicle speed drops more than 16 km/h below the selected value, cruise settings will also be automatically cancelled.
4. If the selected speed limit is canceled for any reason other than those listed above, have the vehicle checked by a Toyota or Lexus dealer as soon as possible.
Return to cruise after forced speed reduction
1. Push the lever up towards «RES/ACC» and hold it in that position. Release the lever when the desired speed is reached. While the lever is pressed, the car will gradually pick up speed.
2. However, in order to return to a higher speed sooner, you should accelerate the vehicle, and then push the lever down in the direction «SET/COAST».
Return to cruise after forced acceleration
1. Push the lever down towards «SET/COAST» and hold it in that position. Release the lever when the desired speed is reached. While the lever is pressed, the vehicle will gradually slow down.
2. However, in order to return to a lower speed sooner, you should slow down the vehicle, and then push the lever down in the direction «SET/COAST».
3. Even if you turn off the overdrive when the tempostat is on, engine braking will not be performed because the tempostat is not turned off. To slow down the vehicle, return to a slower speed by using the cruise control lever or depressing the brake pedal. If the brake pedal is used, the tempostat will be off.
Resume preset speed
1. If the preset speed has been canceled by shifting the governor lever or depressing the brake pedal, pushing the lever up in the direction «RES/ACC» the speed set before the cancellation will be restored.
2. However, if the vehicle speed falls below 40 km/h, the preset speed will not be resumed.
Warning signal about a malfunction in the tempostat system
1. If the control lamp «CRUISE» on the dashboard flashes when using the tempostat, press the button «CRUISE ON OFF» to turn off the system, and then press the button again to turn on the system.
2. If one of the following occurs, there is a malfunction in the tempostat.
- The control lamp does not light up.
- The control lamp flashes again.
- The control lamp goes out after flashing.
3. In this case, contact your Toyota representative to have the vehicle inspected.
