Warning! Avoid touching the impeller blades with your hands, tools and clothing. To avoid personal injury or property damage, do not start the engine with a defective fan. Do not attempt to repair broken impeller blades, replace the complete impeller!
Examination
1. Check the fan impeller for cracks, paying particular attention to the condition of the blade roots. A defective impeller must be replaced without fail!
2. Check fan clutch assembly for signs of leaks, replace if necessary.
3. Shake the impeller in the longitudinal direction - in case of play, replace the clutch assembly.
4. Turn the impeller by hand - you should feel some resistance, increasing as the motor temperature rises. If the impeller rotates too freely or does not rotate at all, replace the clutch assembly.
Replacement
1. Remove the drive belts and remove the fan assembly shroud mounting bolts (refer to accompanying illustration).
2. Give four fixing nuts and separate fan assembly from the water pump. Remove the fan assembly with its shroud from the engine compartment.
3. To separate the impeller from the hub of the viscous clutch, give four fixing nuts (refer to accompanying illustration).
4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Tighten all fasteners to the required torque.
