Cylinder Head Removal — L Series Engines [Toyota Land Cruiser J70]

1. Drain the engine coolant (see the relevant section).

2. (2L-T) Remove the turbocharger (see the relevant section).

3. Remove the timing belt (see the relevant section).

4 (2L-T) Remove the fuel injection pump (see the relevant section).

5. Remove the injectors (see the relevant section).

6. Remove the camshaft pulley.

7. Remove the rear timing belt cover by unscrewing the four bolts.



8. Remove the water pipe and water pipe housing.

a) Disconnect the coolant temperature switch connector.

b) Disconnect the bypass hose from the warm-up regulator on the fuel pump.

c) Remove the three bolts, water pipe, water pipe housing and gasket.



9. Remove the left engine mount bracket.

10. Remove the throttle assembly. (If installed)



a) Disconnect the electrical connector and vacuum tubes from the vacuum shut-off valve.

b) Remove the throttle assembly and gasket.

c) Unscrew the two bolts and the wire clamp.



11. Remove the EGR valve, tube, valve adapter and check valve assembly (if installed).

a) Unscrew the four nuts, remove the air tube, the recirculation valve adapter and two gaskets.



b) Disconnect the connectors from the vacuum shut-off valve and the vacuum adjustment valve.

c) Remove the three bolts and the EGR control valve assembly



d) Unscrew the two nuts and remove the exhaust gas recirculation valve.

12. Remove the intake manifold.

a) Remove the nut and thermal insulator of the glow plug resistor.

b) Unscrew the bolts and nuts, remove the intake manifold and gasket.



(Engines 2L, 3L)

13. Remove the exhaust manifold.

a) Unscrew the four bolts, nut, and remove the heat shield.

b) Unscrew four bolts, four nuts, remove the exhaust manifold and gasket.

14. Remove the right engine mount bracket.

15. Remove the cylinder head cover and gasket by unscrewing eight bolts and two nuts.



16. Remove the cylinder head, a) Loosen and unscrew the eighteen cylinder head bolts in several steps in the sequence shown in the figure.

Caution: Loosening bolts in the wrong order may result in deformation and cracking.




b) Lift the cylinder head off the cylinder block pins and place it on wooden blocks.



Note: If you have difficulty removing the head, insert a screwdriver between the head and the block in the place shown in the figure and separate them.


Caution: Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and cylinder head.
