Removal the timing belt [Toyota Land Cruiser J70]

Note: The indicator on the instrument cluster signals the need to replace the timing belt every 100,000 km. After replacing the timing belt, it is necessary to reset the belt mileage counter, which is part of the speedometer, to zero.


(L-series engines)



1. Remove the drive belts of the attachments.

2. Remove the water pump pulley.

3. Remove the glow plugs.

a) Remove the plastic protective caps.

b) (Only for fixed delay preheating system) Remove the four bolts and the glow plug wire.



v) (For other types of preheating systems)

- Remove the four glow plug wire mounting nuts.



- Remove the nut securing the glow plug wire to the intake manifold.



- Remove the two heat-insulating elements and the glow plug wire.

d) Unscrew the four glow plugs using a socket wrench.



4. Remove the crankshaft pulley,

a) Loosen the pulley bolt.





Timing Belt (L Series): 1 - bolt (M.3. 167 Nm), 2 - plug, 3 - front timing belt cover, 4 - gasket, 5 - bolt (M. 3. 33 Nm), 6 - bolt (M. 3. 44 N·m), 7 - tension roller No.2, 8 - bolt (M.3. 98 N·m), 9 - camshaft pulley, 10 - key, 11 - glow plug wire, 12 - glow plug, 13 - bolt (M. 3. 19 N·m), 14 - tension roller No.1, 15 - tension spring, 16 - fuel injection pump drive pulley, 17 - nut (M. 3. 64 Nm), 18 - bolt (M. 3. 19 N·m), 19 - crankshaft toothed pulley, 20 - timing belt guide, 21 - timing belt, 22 - crankshaft pulley.






Timing belt (1KZ-T): 1 - air duct hose, 2 - air duct, 3 - valve cover, 4 - gasket, 5 - camshaft toothed pulley (driven), 6 - timing belt, 7 - clamp, 8 - belt cover, 9 - tension roller, 10 - belt tensioner, 11 - camshaft toothed pulley (leading), 12 - belt guide flange.


b) Using a puller, remove the pulley.



5. Remove the front timing belt cover.

Remove eleven bolts, washers, timing belt cover, two gaskets and TDC indicator plug.



6. Remove the timing belt guide.



7. Set the piston of the first cylinder to TDC.



a) Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt. Turn the shaft by the bolt until TDC of the first cylinder.

b) Check the alignment of the marks located on the camshaft pulley and the rear timing belt cover. If the marks are not aligned, turn the crankshaft one revolution (360°).



8. Remove the timing belt. Note: If the belt is to be reused, mark the direction of rotation arrow on the belt and alignment marks on the belt and pulleys.



a) Loosen the bolt (A) of tensioner roller No.1, move it to the left as far as possible.



b) Temporarily tighten the roller bolt (A).



c) Remove the timing belt.



9. Remove tensioner roller No.1.

a) Remove two bolts (A and B).

b) Loosen bolt (C), remove bolt, tension roller and spring.



10. Remove the camshaft pulley.

a) Using a special tool, unscrew the pulley bolt.



b) Using a puller, remove the pulley and key.





11. Remove the fuel injection pump drive pulley.

a) Using a special tool, unscrew the pulley bolt.



b) Using a puller, remove the drive pulley.



12. Remove the bolt, tensioner roller No.2 and spacer sleeve.



13. Remove the crankshaft pulley using a puller.





(Engine 1KZ-T)



1. Remove the four bolts, sealing washers, two cover clamps, belt cover and gasket.



2. Bring the piston of the 4th cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke, check the alignment of the timing marks on the driven and leading pulleys of the camshaft with the benchmarks.



3. If the belt is to be reinstalled, use chalk to mark the direction of rotation arrow and the position of the belt relative to the pulleys.





4. Unscrew the two tensioner mounting bolts and remove the tensioner.



5. Remove the tensioner roller mounting bolt (internal hexagon 10 mm), remove the video.



6. Remove the camshaft drive belt.

7. Unscrew the four bolts securing the belt guide flange to the drive gear and remove the flange.



8. Remove the air intake duct and valve cover.

9. Holding the camshaft, unscrew the bolt securing the driven toothed pulley, remove the pulley. Do not lose the key!
