Removal the axle shaft



1. Jack up the car.

2. Remove the wheel and brake drum.

3. Disconnect the brake pipes from the brake shield.

4. Disconnect the parking brake cable.

a) Remove the cotter pin and pin from the cable bracket.

b) Loosen the two parking brake cable mounting bolts.

5. Remove the axle shaft.

a) Unscrew the four nuts.

b) Remove the axle shaft with the brake shield assembly.

Warning: When removing the axle shaft, be careful not to damage the oil seal.




6. Remove the O-ring.



Disassembling the axle shaft



1. Remove the retaining ring.





2. Disconnect the axle shaft from the brake shield.

a) Install and tighten the special tool using four nuts on the brake shield.



b) Using a press, remove the axle shaft with the bearing holder.

c) Separate the holder from the axle shaft.



3. Remove the outer oil seal using a screwdriver.



4. Using a punch and hammer, knock the bearing out of the brake shield.

8 - Cotter pin.


Checking the axle shaft



Check the axle shaft for wear, damage and runout and replace if necessary.
  • Maximum shaft runout - 2.0 mm
  • Maximum flange runout - 0.2 mm

Assembly of the axle shaft



1. Install the axle bearing using a hammer.



2. Install the outer oil seal.

a) Using a suitable sized socket head and a hammer, install the new seal.

b) Apply grease to the lip of the oil seal.



3. Install the axle shaft in the brake shield.



a) Place the bearing holder on the axle shaft.

b) Using a special tool and a press, install the axle shaft in the brake shield.



4. Install the retaining ring onto the axle shaft.

Installing the axle shaft



1. Replace the inner seal.

a) Using a puller, remove the oil seal from the rear axle housing.



b) Using a suitable sized socket and a hammer, install the new seal. Apply grease to the seal lip.



2. Install a new O-ring into the rear axle housing, after lubricating it.



3. Install the axle shaft assembly with the brake shield into the rear axle housing and tighten the bolts.

Warning: Do not damage the inner oil seal when installing the axle shaft.

  • Tightening torque - 66 Nm

4. Connect the brake pipes and parking brake cable.

5. Install the brake drum and wheel.

6. Bleed the brake system.
