Charts of sizes and adjustments are given in the appendix at the end of the book. The required dimensions and adjustment data are not always given in the description, but they are contained in the mentioned tables. It should be especially noted that in order to avoid errors, you should make sure that the data is suitable for your model, since there are differences between the sedan, combi (coupe) and a station wagon.
Routine operations such as "open the engine compartment hood" before working in the engine compartment, or "unscrew the wheel nuts" before removing the wheel are not always indicated, as they are self-evident.
Complex work, on the contrary, is described in more detail. Below are the most important instructions to follow when carrying out repair work:
- Install nuts and bolts clean and lightly lubricated. Check the integrity of the surfaces of nuts and threaded parts and remove any burrs. When in doubt, it is better to install new nuts and bolts. Always install new self-locking nuts.
- Do not degrease nuts and bolts.
- The bolts installed on the vehicle have certain characteristics and cannot be replaced with others. There are numbers on the bolt heads that indicate hardness. The number 7 is for the highest tightening torques, and the number 4 is for the weakest tightening torques. Do not install a bolt with a lower hardness number.
- Maintain the tightening torques given in the table. The tightening torque data is divided into groups corresponding to the chapters and is therefore easy to find.
- All sealing washers, gaskets, locking elements, cotter pins and O-rings must be replaced during assembly. The seals must also be replaced when the seal is removed. Lubricate the oil seal lips before installing it. Install the oil seal so that its lips prevent the leakage of oil or grease.
- If the left or right side of the car is indicated, then it is meant in relation to the forward direction, the same applies to the concepts "front" And "rear". If necessary, a special explanation is given in the description.
- It is very important when working with the brake system, wheel suspension and generally under the car to have reliable stands. The onboard jack is intended only for changing tires on the road. If you still need to use it during repairs, then only to lift the car and lower it onto the appropriate stands. These tripod stands are also best installed when using a garage jack. You cannot lay bricks, at least when using blocks that have a large supporting surface, use them with a sufficiently strong wooden pad. Chapter 1.5 describes how to lift a vehicle using a lift.
- Lubricants, oils, underbody protection and all mineral substances corrode the rubber parts of the body and brake system. Especially avoid contact with such substances, including fuel, of parts of hydraulic devices. Clean brake system parts only with brake fluid or alcohol. It should be especially taken into account that brake fluid is poisonous and corrodes paint.
- When carrying out repair work, install only original TOYOTA parts. To avoid any difficulties later, it is better to refuse to install any other spare parts. The exception is those parts of electrical equipment for which there is appropriate permission from the manufacturer.
- When purchasing spare parts and parts, be sure to indicate the exact model designation with the chassis number, and in certain cases, the engine number and year of manufacture. This will speed up the delivery of spare parts and avoid errors.
- Do all work on the car, especially with the brake system and steering, very carefully. During each repair, the operational safety of the vehicle must be ensured.
The following precautions should be carefully observed:
- When disconnecting hoses, pull only on the end, not the middle of the hose.
- When disconnecting connectors, grasp only the connector, not the wire.
- Avoid dropping electrical parts such as relays or sensors. When they fall on a hard surface (for example, on the ground) they should be replaced. Do not install these parts on the vehicle.
- When connecting a vacuum pressure gauge, do not connect a hose that has a diameter larger than the fitting.
