A drop in oil pressure can be seen as a sign that the engine is in need of a rebuild. The oil pressure warning light is not diagnostic equipment that monitors the condition of the lubrication system, but only informs the driver about a dangerous decrease in oil pressure. Even the oil pressure gauge built into the instrument panel, despite the great detail of the information provided, can only be considered as an informational device. To obtain oil pressure data which can then be compared with the requirements Specifications, it is necessary to use a mechanical (not electric!) pressure gauge complete with accurate tachometer.
1. Locate the oil pressure switch block.
2. Remove the sensor-switch and replace it with an adapter for connecting a mechanical pressure gauge. To seal the threaded connection of the nozzle, use a Teflon sealing tape or FUM tape.
3. Connect an accurate tachometer to the engine according to the manufacturers instructions.
4. Check the oil pressure while running at the specified Specifications rpm when the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature. Compare measurement results with regulatory requirements. If the pressure is too low, the degree of wear of the bearings and/or the oil pump should be assessed.
