- Install the dial indicator on the stand in front of the cylinder block so that the dipstick rests against the outer journal of the crankshaft, as shown in Figure 104. Push the crankshaft to the side with a screwdriver, set the dial indicator scale to zero and press the shaft in the other direction. The instrument display gives axial play of the crankshaft, which should be recorded for subsequent assembly. If it is more than 0.30 mm, this must be taken into account during installation. The middle bearing has thrust half-rings that control axial play. If the play is large, you need to install new washers or larger washers.

- If there is no dial indicator, the end play can also be determined using a set of feeler gauges inserted between the crankshaft flange and the bearing.
