- Install the dial indicator on the stand at the front of the cylinder block so that the measuring probe rests against the extreme journal of the crankshaft, as shown in Figure 104. Press the crankshaft to the side with a screwdriver, set the dial indicator scale to zero and press the shaft to the other side. The device indication gives the axial play of the crankshaft, which should be recorded for subsequent assembly. If it is more than 0.30 mm, this should be taken into account during installation. The middle bearing has thrust half rings that eliminate axial play. If the play is large, new washers or washers of increased size should be installed.

- If there is no dial indicator, axial play can also be determined using a set of feeler gauges inserted between the crankshaft flange and the bearing.
