Each time the crankshaft of the oil pump or the flange of the seal is removed, the seals must be replaced. The front flange is also the housing of the oil pump. Both seals can be replaced without removing the engine when oil leaks are found in these places. But if you need to remove the gearbox, it may be better to remove the engine in both cases. Clutch slippage is, for example, a sign of a damaged rear seal. To remove the front seal, you need to remove the V-belt, toothed belt cover, toothed belt and crankshaft toothed wheel. To unscrew the pulley bolt, engage the gear, tighten the handbrake well and use the head to unscrew the bolt. To remove the rear seal, you need to remove the gearbox, clutch and flywheel (or drive disc in automatic transmission). To remove the rear oil seal, carefully insert a bent screwdriver from the rear side. Be careful not to damage the flange or the crankshaft. To protect the tip of the screwdriver, wrap it with adhesive tape. If the engine is removed, unscrew the intermediate plate of the engine and knock out the flange of the oil seal (from the inside out). The removal of the middle seal is done in a similar way or the oil pump is removed. When installing flanges or seals, proceed as follows:

Flange removed:

  • Lubricate the lips and the outer contour of the seal and carefully press the seal until its outer surface is flush with the flange surface. Press the seals into the rear flange and into the oil pump from the outside in. Figure 106 shows pressing in the front seal on a 2.0 L engine.

  • Carefully place the oil seal with the gasket on the crankshaft to the cylinder block and center it well. Tighten the bolts evenly around the circle.

Flange not removed:

  • Lubricate the oil seal and place it on the crankshaft and into the hole in the flange or oil pump.
  • Using a piece of pipe of such a diameter that it can rest against the outer edge of the gland, press the gland into the hole. Do not damage the gland.
