- Arrow on the piston crown (applied, or on a new connecting rod with the inscription "VORN") should be towards the front of the engine.
- Label "FRONT" on the connecting rod should face the front of the engine. Together (2) the 1.6 liter engine has a tide. On a 2.0L engine, the straight edge of the connecting rod should face forward.
- Cylinder number indices (Pic. 22) on the connecting rods and bearing caps must match.
- Check that after assembly the piston can freely tilt on the connecting rod in both directions.
- Carefully insert the lower side part of the oil scraper ring, the expansion spring and the upper side part of the ring into the lower groove with your fingers. The position of the thermal gaps does not matter.
- Using a piston ring pliers, insert the piston rings into the grooves one at a time (see Fig. 87) To avoid mixing up compression rings, inspect their cross-section before installation. The second compression ring has an upward bevel on the outside. In addition, compression rings have markings and inscriptions that, after installing the rings, should be visible from the piston bottom.
Measuring the play of connecting rod bearings
