1.3L petrol engine, models from 7/84
Attention: Removing the diesel timing belt look here.
Removing
Put the car on a lift and remove the cover in the right wheel housing.
Remove spark plugs.
Remove V-belt.
Turn the crankshaft until the marking on the camshaft pulley matches the marking "0" on the cover of the gas distribution mechanism.
To be able to crank the crankshaft, turn on the fifth gear and move the car from its place on a flat surface. You can also turn the crankshaft in another way. To do this, lift one of the front wheels, engage fifth gear and turn the wheel by hand.
Loosen the cylinder head cover bolts and remove the cover.
Check that the rocker arms of the valves of the first cylinder are not pressed. There should be a small gap between rocker arms and valves. The rocker arms of the valves of the fourth cylinder must be pressed. If these conditions are not met, rotate the crankshaft a full turn.
Loosen the mounting bolt and remove the crankshaft pulley. To prevent the pulley from turning, TOYOTA specialized workshops use a special tool SST 09213-14010 and SST09330-00020. In the absence of the indicated tool, engage first gear and handbrake, thus blocking the engine.
Remove the crankshaft pulley. The tool SST09213-31021 is used for this. If the specified tool is not available, then a universal puller can be used, for example, HAZET 787N-16.
Attention: Before removing the pulley, put the gearbox in neutral and check again that the markings on the crankshaft pulley match the markings on the timing cover. Marking gels match, in no case change the position of the crankshaft.
Remove the top and bottom timing belt covers.
Remove the crankshaft gear.
If a previously used toothed belt is to be installed, the direction of rotation must be marked on it with a felt-tip pen using, for example, a felt-tip pen. The motor rotates in a clockwise direction. It is necessary to apply markings on the gears of the crankshaft and camshaft and the corresponding markings on the toothed belt.
Loosen tensioning roller 1 and press roller as far as it will go in direction of arrow. In this position, tighten the idler pulley bolt (Pic. G-1014).
Remove toothed belt. After that, the position of the gears should not be changed.
Installation
Caution: Do not kink or twist the toothed belt. A dirty and damaged belt should be replaced. Check the ease and uniformity of rotation of the tension rollers.
Attention: If the camshaft rotates with the toothed belt removed, the pistons must not be allowed to be at TDC. This can cause serious damage to pistons and valves. If it becomes necessary to rotate the camshaft, it is necessary to first set the porosity to the middle position in terms of the height of the cylinder. To do this, mark with chalk on top of the crankshaft pulley marking (the piston of the first cylinder must be set to TDC). Then turn the crankshaft pulley to the right or left 1/2 turn. In this case, the marking will point to the right or left.
Put on the toothed belt. If an old belt is installed, then the direction of its rotation must be observed.
Attention: When installing a toothed belt, do not change the position of the crankshaft and camshaft. Otherwise, serious engine damage or loss of engine power may result.
Check if the camshaft is in the position corresponding to the TDC of the piston of the first cylinder. To do this, the marking on the camshaft wheel must be in a vertical position above the wheel bolt.
Attention: There may be several markings on the camshaft wheel. You need to use the marking that corresponds to the type of this engine (1E or 2E).
At the same time, the marking on the crankshaft gear must match the marking on the oil pump housing. In this case, the piston of the first cylinder is at TDC.
Remove bolt securing tensioning pulley 1 and press pulley against toothed belt.
Turn the crankshaft twice in the direction of engine rotation and check that the markings match.
Tighten the idler pulley bolt to 18 Nm.
Rotate the crankshaft twice in the direction of engine rotation and check the markings again.
Check toothed belt tension. Between the two outermost wheels, the toothed belt must be twisted by hand through an angle of 90°. If this twisting angle is not reached, loosen the idler pulley mounting bolt and tighten it again.
Install the crankshaft wheel washer.
Install the timing belt cover and secure it with six bolts.
Install the key on the crankshaft. To facilitate the installation of the pulley, install the key so that it is sunk slightly more in front than in the back.
Install the pulley on the crankshaft, if necessary, use a pipe to fit it. Clamp the pulley with tool SST 09213-14010 and tighten the bolt to 150 Nm. If these tools are not available, engage first gear and, with the help of an assistant, press the brake pedal, thus blocking the engine.
Install the cylinder head cover.
Install the V-belt and tension it.
Install spark plugs.
Bolt the cover to the right wheel housing.
