Bring the base length of both tie rods to the same value, that is, measure both dimensions before measuring toe "A" And "IN" in the location shown in Figure 203. The difference should not exceed 1.0 mm. Otherwise, loosen the tie rod locknuts and turn the heads accordingly.
Pic. 203. When replacing steering rods, the difference between the sizes must be set "A" And "IN" no more than 1.0 mm.
Toe measurement is carried out as follows:
- Place a suitable measuring rod on the front side of the wheels to the lugs of the rims or the centers of the tires to measure toe and set the scale to zero. Mark the points of application of the slats with chalk.
- Remove the rack and move the car forward half a turn of the wheels until the chalk marks are located at the level of the hubs at the rear of the wheels, as shown in Figure 204.
Pic. 204. After moving the car forward in the direction of the arrow, the points of application of the measuring rod should be at the same height (dashed line)
- Place the measuring rod with the zeroed scale on the back of the stake and move the rod probes. Read the scale reading.
- If the size on the rear side is larger than the size on the front side, then there is a negative toe-in, if less, then the toe-in is positive. The best adjustment value is 0 mm, but if the measurement result does not exceed 2.0 mm of positive toe or 2.0 mm of negative toe, toe adjustment is not required. If adjustment is required, then the toe should be 0 mm with a tolerance of 4-1 mm or -1 mm.
Toe adjustment is performed as follows:
- Remove the wire fastenings of the cuffs. Loosen the locknuts of both tie rods. Both stages of work are shown in Figure 205.
Pic. 205. Before adjusting toe, loosen the lock nuts (left) and release the cuffs (on right).
- Hold the tie rod end with a wrench or pliers in the flat part of the tie rod shown in Figure 206 and use the wrench to set the tie rods on both sides to the same length.

- Remeasure toe and, if adjusted correctly, tighten both locknuts to 74 Nm.
- Push the cuffs, squeeze the wire clips and insert their ends into the groove of the cuffs.
