At certain temperatures, crystals form in diesel fuel, which thicken the fuel so much that it cannot pass through the filter. To prevent these malfunctions, petrol stations sell fuel that corresponds to a certain time of year. At negative temperatures, fuel is sold that has better flow properties, which prevents it from thickening. The fuel sold in the summer creates problems already at a temperature of -2 C, while winter fuel is normally used at temperatures up to -15 C. During transition periods, additives are introduced into the fuel, ensuring its operation at temperatures down to -8 C - -10 C. Problems with winter operation arise under the following conditions:

• The temperature dropped below -15°C.
• The car had not been used for a long time, it was needed in winter, and it can be assumed that summer diesel fuel was poured into the tank.
• Refueling at a gas station with fuel not intended for winter use.
• If it is necessary to ensure normal operation of the engine at temperatures below -15°C, it is necessary to add up to 30% of normal gasoline to the fuel tank, depending on what temperature is expected. However, since such a mixture has a bad effect on the engine, it is necessary to refuel with normal diesel fuel again at the first opportunity. The engine starts easier on a diesel-gasoline mixture.
