1. Preparation:

a) Warm up the transmission fluid to operating temperature (50-80°C).

b) Unscrew the service plug of the gearbox housing and connect a pressure gauge in its place.

Please note: Always check the pressure with two people - one person should watch the wheels and the other should check.

A241L, A241E, A245E (until 1994.)

A245E (since 1994)

A540N

2. Measure the pressure in the main line.

a) Block the car wheels with chocks and apply the parking brake.

b) Start the engine and check the idle speed.

c) Press the brake pedal and move the selector to position "D". Measure the pressure at idle speed.

d) Press the accelerator pedal all the way down. Measure the pressure in the main line when the maximum rotation speed is reached.

Caution: Release the accelerator pedal and stop the test if the rear wheels begin to spin before the RPM reaches its maximum value.

d) Repeat the check with the selector in the "R" position.

e) If the pressure is not equal to the specified one, check the adjustment of the automatic transmission control cable and repeat the check.

3. Analysis of the test results:

a) If the pressure on all ranges is higher than the specified values, then:
  • the throttle valve control cable is not adjusted,
  • the throttle valve is faulty,
  • the pressure regulator is faulty.

b) If the pressure on all ranges is below the specified values, then:
  • the throttle valve control cable is not adjusted,
  • the throttle valve is faulty,
  • the pressure regulator is faulty,
  • the gearbox pump is faulty,
  • the downshift clutch is faulty (increasing) planetary gear set.

c) If the pressure is below the specified values in the "D" range, then:

  • leak of working fluid in the control circuit in the "D" range,
  • the forward clutch is faulty,
  • the downshift clutch is faulty (increasing) planetary gear set.

d) If the pressure is below the specified values in the "R" range, then:
  • oil leak in the control circuit in the "R" range,
  • the reverse clutch is faulty,
  • the first gear and reverse gear brake are faulty,
  • the downshift clutch is faulty (increasing) planetary gear set.
