Attention: In the process of measuring the idle speed and CO concentration, the radiator cooling fan must not be allowed to turn on. If the fan turns on, you must wait for it to turn off.
Test conditions: Check the exhaust system. To do this, close the end of the exhaust pipe with a rag. All pipe connections must be sealed.
Attention: Ensure good ventilation of the work area. There is a danger of poisoning.
Check the carburetor rods and shafts for play. Repair or adjust as necessary.
Start, warm up the engine and stop it. The lower radiator hose should be warm.
Switch off electrical consumers.
If the vehicle has a cold start aid, do not turn it on. The control button of this device must be fully retracted.
The air filter element must be clean. It is better to install a new filter element for adjustment.
Attach a tachometer and a device for measuring CO concentration. Install the air filter. If the car has an ignition coil installed in the ignition distributor and does not have a built-in tachometer, then the number of revolutions can be measured using a free, green plug located on the ignition distributor housing.
Check the fuel level at the glass window in the carburetor. The fuel level must be between the markings.
Start the engine at idle.
Engine displacement 1.3 l up to 7/84 release: Check the ignition timing and the angle of the closed state. Adjust if necessary.
1.3L engine since 8/84 and 1.6L engine: Check ignition timing. Adjust if necessary.
Check suction duct for leaks. To do this, brush the joints with a brush dipped in gasoline. If at the same time the engine speed increases, this indicates the presence of leaks. Locate and eliminate leaks.
Caution: Do not breathe petrol vapours. They are poisonous! Do not allow gasoline to come into contact with heated engine components and ignition system components. There is a danger of ignition!
Check idle speed.
Idle speed
1) without power steering.
2) with power steering.
If the specified idle speed is not reached, stop the engine and adjust the speed as follows:
Vehicles with catalytic converter: Remove the vacuum hose from the air intake system and plug it.
1.3L engines from 8/84: Remove the vacuum hose from the thermostatic valve and plug it.
Insert the CO concentration measuring device into the muffler.
Bring the engine speed up to 2500 rpm for 2 minutes.
Let the engine run for 3 minutes at idle (engine with catalyst - 12 min).
Check CO concentration. Its value should be 1.5±0.5 volume%.
Adjustment screws
Engine displacement of 1.3 liters up to 7/84 of release
1.3 liter engine from 8/84 release
1.3L engine with catalytic converter
1.6 L engine with converter
If the CO concentration deviates from the set value, remove the protective cap, if present. If necessary, remove the air filter, and after completing the adjustment, replace it.
By adjusting, set the desired CO concentration and speed. Some engine models require a special key for this application (TOYOTA SST 09243-00020).
Caution: Adjust the CO concentration carefully.
Raise the engine speed to 2500 rpm for 2 minutes.
Let the engine run for 3 minutes at idle (for engines with a catalyst - 12 min).
Recheck the idle speed and CO concentration. Adjust if necessary.
Put on the removed vacuum hoses.
Insert a new protective cap.
Remove gauges.
