The system is designed to start the engine by rotating the crankshaft at the required speed and consists of a battery, a starter, a traction relay and connecting wires. The traction relay is mounted directly on the starter (see fig. Car starter parts 1980-87).
Attention! Starter gear drive on cars 1980-87 provided by a lever connected to the traction relay plunger. Since 1988, 2 types of planetary gear starters have been installed on Land Cruiser vehicles. Starters of these types are not subject to repair and are replaced as an assembly with a traction relay.
On vehicles with a manual transmission, the starter is activated only after pressing the clutch pedal. On vehicles with automatic transmission, the starter is engaged after the selector is moved to the Park or Neutral position.
Precautionary measures
Observe the following precautions when working on the starting system components.
Turning on the starter is allowed for a period of not more than 15 seconds, followed by a pause of at least 2 minutes.
Since the starter is directly connected to the battery, then in the event of inept actions, overloads or accidental short circuits, arcing and fire can occur.
Always disconnect the battery from the ground before starting the repair of the engine starting system units.
