Examination
1. Before checking the fuel level sensor, completely fill the tank with gasoline.
2. On cars 1988-90. find the connector located next to the tank, on cars since 1991, remove the rear seat and hatch cover.
3. Disconnect the fuel level sensor connector.
4. Measure the resistance of the sensor between the terminals.
5. With a fully filled tank, the resistance should be 17 ohms (1988-90) or 3 ohm on vehicles since 1991
6. With an empty tank, the resistance should be 120 ohms (1988-90) or 110 ohms on vehicles since 1991
7. Replace the sensor if the resistance is not as specified.
8. The sensor can also be tested by removing it from the tank. Measure the resistance with the float fully lowered (tank empty) and in the uppermost position of the float (full tank).
Replacement
1. Remove the pump assembly with the sensor from the fuel tank.
2. Tilt and carefully remove the sensor.
3. Disconnect the connector, unscrew the fastening screws and remove the sensor.
