Removing
1. Perform decompression.
2. Disconnect the battery from the ground.
3. Remove the fuel tank (on cars 1988-90.)
4. On vehicles since 1991, remove the middle seat and sunroof.
5. Disconnect the connector and fuel lines.
6. Turn away bolts (indicated by arrows) fixing the fuel pump and fuel level sensor.
7. Tilting, carefully remove the fuel pump assembly with the sensor from the fuel tank.
8. Carefully pry the bottom of the pump out of the bracket.
9. Remove the rubber gasket from the pump.
10. Remove the lock washer securing the coarse filter to the pump.
11. Remove the filter and check its condition. Replace the filter if it is heavily soiled.
12. If only the coarse filter is being replaced, then install a new filter, washer, gasket and insert the lower part of the pump back into the bracket. Install the pump assembly with the sensor in the fuel tank.
13. If the fuel pump is being replaced, then remove the clamp and disconnect the hose.
14. Disconnect the wires from the pump leads and remove the pump.
Installation
1. Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
2. Replace the gaskets on the fuel line fittings.
