Pic. 2.90. Generator components
The battery charging system includes a generator with a segment winding.
The alternator pulley is equipped with a freewheel.
To drive the generator, a poly V-belt is used, the tension of which is maintained by an automatic tensioner.
Generator with segment winding
The generator with a segment winding has a high efficiency, a significant output current with small dimensions and low weight.
To compensate for torsional vibrations of the engine crankshaft and significantly reduce drive belt wear, the alternator pulley is equipped with a freewheel.
Maintenance recommendation
In connection with the use of a pulley with a freewheel, a new special tool SST has been introduced (09820-63020).
Unlike a conventional generator, which has an F terminal used for testing, a segment-wound generator does not have this terminal.
Design features and principle of operation
Pic. 2.91. Design features of the generator
The stator winding of the generator consists of segments, the ends of the windings of which are interconnected by soldering. The electrical resistance of these conductors is reduced compared to conventional starter windings due to their special shape. This design allows you to reduce the size of the generator.

The use of an automatic belt tensioner avoids tension adjustment.
