1. Remove the components that block access to the corresponding gland, or remove the cover in which the replacement gland is installed (see Sections Removal, installation, dismantling and assembly of a head of cylinders and Removal and installation of timing gears).
2. In case of oil seal replacement with the cover not removed, the old oil seal can be removed from its seat with a special tool or a screwdriver (refer to illustration). Try not to leave scratches and scuffs on the surface of the shaft pin or the walls of the seat, the presence of such defects will lead to a quick failure of the new stuffing box.
3. If replacing the oil seal with the cover removed, knock the oil seal out of the cover using a screwdriver and hammer.
4. Clean the inside surface of the seat. Lightly lubricate the outer edge of the new oil seal with clean engine oil, fill the lips of the oil seal with universal grease.
5. Using an appropriately sized socket head or a piece of pipe of a suitable diameter as a mandrel, seat a new oil seal in its seat (refer to illustration) (the mandrel should rest only on the hard outer edge of the end face of the stuffing box) to the same depth as the old one was sunk. Make sure the seal is seated correctly.
6. Reinstall the removed components (see Sections Removal, installation, dismantling and assembly of a head of cylinders and Removal and installation of timing gears).
7. Start the engine and check for signs of oil leaks around the seal seat.
