Removal and installation of a manual gearbox [Toyota Camry XV20]

Removal



1. Remove the hood.

2. Release the pressure in the fuel system.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.



4. If the vehicle is equipped with a cruise control system, disconnect the wire from the operating mechanism unit of the system and remove the unit (the bolts of the electronic unit of the cruise control system are indicated by arrows).

5. Remove the battery and battery tray.

6. Remove the air filter air intake pipe.

7. Remove the fuel filler cap and disconnect the fuel lines connecting the engine to the body.

8. Remove the fuel filter and filter bracket.

9. Remove the starter.



10. Disconnect the ground wire (indicated by the arrow) from the gearbox.





11. Remove the cylinder bolts (left arrows) hydraulic clutch drive from the gearbox. Do not disconnect the tubes from the cylinder. Unscrew the bolts of the container with the hydraulic clutch drive fluid (right arrows) and remove the tube bracket.

12. Disconnect the throttle cable and cruise control cable from the throttle linkage

13. Disconnect all hoses and wires.

14. Remove the cooling fans. Drain the coolant, remove the radiator, remove all coolant hoses and heater hoses.

15. Disconnect the gear shift cables.



16. Remove the upper transmission mounting bolts.

17. Remove the exhaust manifold bracket.

18. Loosen the front wheel bolts. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the front wheels.



19. Disconnect the exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifolds and from the catalytic converter. Remove the front section of the exhaust pipe (indicated by arrows).



20. Remove the protective shields.

21. Drain the engine oil.

22. Remove the drive belts.

23. Drain the gearbox oil.

24. Remove the axle shafts.



25. Disconnect the power steering gear from the suspension.

26. Remove the four stabilizer bar bracket bolts.



27. Tie the steering gear to the body and unscrew the bolts (indicated by arrows). The steering gear must not interfere with the removal of the gearbox.



28. On six-cylinder engines, remove the bolts securing the shock absorber to the gearbox (indicated by arrows).



29. Remove the front engine mount bolts.

30. Remove the left engine mount and mount bracket.

31. Disconnect the rear engine mount from the transmission.



32. Remove the suspension cross member bolts.

33. Place a jack under the gearbox.

34. Remove the stiffener on the left side of the gearbox.



35. Remove bracket bolts (A), right stiffener (B) and end plate (C) – 4-cylinder engine.



36. End Disc Bolts (indicated by arrows) – 6-cylinder engines.



37. Carefully lower the gearbox.

Installation



The gearbox is installed in the reverse order of removal.
