Pic. 1.127. Manual shift lever diagram
The scheme of switching of the lever of a mechanical transmission is shown in drawing 1.127.
When changing gear, press the clutch pedal all the way down, then slowly release it. Do not keep your foot on the clutch pedal while driving, as this may damage the clutch. Do not use the clutch to hold the vehicle when stopping on a hill - use the parking brake to do this.
Upshifting too fast or downshifting too slowly will overload the engine and cause detonation. Constantly revving the engine up to maximum speed in each gear results in increased engine wear and increased fuel consumption.
Maximum allowable speeds
Entering an expressway or overtaking slow moving vehicles may require maximum acceleration. Be sure to observe the following maximum permitted speeds for each gear:
transmission - speed, km/h
- 1 — 52
- 2 — 89
- 3 — 137
- 4 — 178
Attention! Do not downshift if the vehicle speed exceeds the maximum allowable speed for the next downshift.
If shifting into reverse is difficult, shift into neutral, immediately release the clutch pedal, then try shifting again.
When towing a trailer, to maintain engine braking efficiency, do not shift into 5th gear.
