Removal the oil cooler



1. Drain the coolant.

2. Remove the oil dipstick.

3. (3S-FE, 4S-FE) Remove the exhaust manifold bracket by unscrewing the bolt and nut.

4. Remove the oil filter.

5. Remove the oil cooler.

a) Disconnect the two bypass hoses from the oil cooler.



b) (3S-FE, 4S-FE) Remove the check valve and washer.

c) Unscrew the nut and remove the oil cooler.



d) Remove the O-ring and gasket from the oil cooler.

Checking the oil cooler



1. (3S-FE, 4S-FE) Check the check valve. Press the check valve with a wooden rod and check for dents. If it is dented, replace the valve.



2. Check the oil cooler for damage and clogging. Replace the oil cooler if necessary.





Installing an oil cooler



1. Install the oil cooler.

a) Clean the contact surfaces of the oil cooler and cylinder block.



b) Install a new O-ring and gasket onto the oil cooler.



c) Temporarily tighten the oil cooler nut.

g) (3S-FE. 4S-FE) Apply engine oil to the threads and under the check valve head.

d) (3S-FE, 4S-FE) Install the washer and tighten the check valve



Tightening torque - 78 Nm

f) Tighten the nut.

Tightening torque:
  • 3S-FE, 4S-FE — 8 Nm
  • ZS-T - 59 Nm

g) Connect the two coolant bypass hoses to the oil cooler.

2. Install the oil filter (see replacing the oil filter in the section "General check and adjustment procedures")

3. (3S-FE, 4S-FE) Install the exhaust manifold bracket and tighten the bolt and nut.

Tightening torque - 42 Nm

4. Fill with coolant.

5. Start the engine and check for leaks.

6. Check the engine oil level.
