Replacing crankshaft seals [Toyota Camry Vista-V40]

Note: There are two methods ("A" and "B") for replacing crankshaft oil seals.


1. Replace the front crankshaft oil seal.

A. With the oil pump removed from the cylinder block.

a) Using a screwdriver and hammer, knock out the oil seal as shown in the figure.



b) Using a pipe of suitable diameter and a hammer, press in the new oil seal until its surface is flush with the oil pump housing.



c) Apply grease to the lip of the oil seal.

B. With the oil pump installed on the cylinder block:

a) Using a knife, cut off the protruding edge of the oil seal.

b) Using a screwdriver, after wrapping it with electrical tape, remove the seal.

Note: Do not damage the crankshaft.




c) Apply grease to the lip of the new oil seal.



d) Using a suitable tool and a hammer, press the seal until its surface is flush with the edge of the oil pump housing.

2. Replace the rear crankshaft oil seal.

A. The rear oil seal holder has been removed from the cylinder block.

a) Using a screwdriver and hammer, knock out the seal.



b) Using a suitable tool and a hammer, press the new seal until its surface is flush with the edge of the rear seal retainer.



c) Apply grease to the lip of the oil seal.

B. The rear oil seal holder is installed on the cylinder block.

a) Use a knife to cut off the edge of the seal.

b) With a screwdriver (having previously wrapped it with electrical tape) remove the seal.

Note: Do not damage the crankshaft.




c) Apply grease to the lip of the new oil seal.



d) Using a suitable tool and a hammer, press the new oil seal until its surface is flush with the edge of the rear oil seal retainer.
