Starting the engine after major repairs [Toyota Camry XV10]

1. With the engine installed in the engine bay of the vehicle, check the engine oil and coolant levels. Check that all previously removed wires and hoses are in place.

2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition module and remove the fuel pump relay. Crank the engine with the starter until the oil pressure warning light goes out, then reconnect the electrical connector to the ignition module and install the fuel pump relay.

3. Start the engine. The engine may take longer than usual to start due to the fuel system being disconnected.

4. With the engine idling, check for fuel, coolant, and oil leaks. At this stage of engine operation, you may notice odor and smoke from hot engine parts as oil that got on the engine during assembly burns off.

5. Let the engine idle until the coolant is warm, which can be felt through the upper radiator hose. Then turn off the engine. After the engine has cooled, check the oil and coolant levels.

6. When installing new pistons, piston rings or crankshaft bearings in the engine, it is necessary to run the engine in for the first 800 km.
