Preliminary check
1. Warm up the engine and transmission to normal operating temperature.
2. Check the transmission fluid level.
3. If the level is too low, add fluid and check again.
4. If the level is too high, drain the excess fluid.

5. If the fluid foams, drain it and fill it with new fluid. Check to see if engine coolant is getting into the transmission fluid.
6. Check the engine idle speed.
7. Check the throttle cable.
8. Check the operation of the gear shift mechanism.
Finding a leak
If you find that there is a transmission fluid leak, you need to pinpoint its location. To do this, warm up the engine and place the car on a sheet of clean cardboard. After a few minutes, you will be able to easily identify the leak by the stains that form on the cardboard.
