Removal and installation of automatic transmission [Toyota Camry XV20]

Removal



1. Remove the hood.

2. Release the pressure in the fuel system.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

4. Remove the battery and battery tray.



5. If the vehicle is equipped with a cruise control system, disconnect the wire from the operating mechanism unit of the system (indicated by the arrow) and remove the block itself.

6. Remove the starter.

7. Remove the fuel filler cap and disconnect the fuel lines connecting the engine to the body.

8. Disconnect the tubes (indicated by arrows) transmission fluid radiator from the gearbox.

9. Disconnect the wire from the shift lever lock switch.



10. Disconnect the wire from the speed sensor.

11. Disconnect the cables from the throttle linkage.



12. Disconnect all hoses and wires from the gearbox (the ground wire bolt is indicated by the arrow). Mark the ends of all disconnected hoses and wires to avoid confusion during installation.

13. Remove the cooling fans. Drain the coolant, remove the radiator and all cooling and heating system hoses.

14. Disconnect the gear shift cable from the transmission.

15. Loosen the front wheel bolts, lift the car and secure it on supports. Secure the engine on the lift. Remove the front wheels.

16. Remove the exhaust manifold bracket.

17. Remove the front section of the exhaust pipe.

18. Remove the protective shields.

19. Drain the transmission fluid.

20. Remove the axle shafts.

21. Remove the front engine mount bolts.

22. Unscrew the nuts of the left gearbox support.

23. Remove the rear engine mount.

24. On models equipped with power steering, disconnect the steering gear from the suspension.

25. Remove the four stabilizer bar bracket bolts.

26. Tie the steering gear to the body and unscrew the bolts. The steering gear should not interfere with the removal of the gearbox.





27. Unscrew the suspension crossmember bolts. When removing the crossmember, do not forget to make installation marks.

28. Place a jack under the gearbox.

29. Remove the stiffeners from the left and right sides of the gearbox.



30. Unscrew the bolts (indicated by arrows) torque converter covers.



31. Remove the bolts securing the torque converter to the drive disc.





32. Remove the bolts securing the top of the transmission housing to the engine.



33. Remove the bolts securing the lower part of the transmission housing to the engine.

34. Disconnect the gearbox from the engine and carefully lower it.

Installation



The gearbox is installed in the reverse order of removal.
