Removing
1. Remove the hood.
2. Release the pressure in the fuel system.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
4. Remove the battery and battery shelf.
5. If the car is equipped with a cruise control system, disconnect the wire from the system operating mechanism unit (indicated by an arrow) and remove the block.
6. Remove the starter.
7. Remove the fuel filler cap and disconnect the fuel pipes connecting the engine to the body.
8. Disconnect tubes (indicated by arrows) transmission fluid cooler from the gearbox.
9. Disconnect the wire from the shift lock system switch.
10. Disconnect the wire from the speed sensor.
11. Disconnect the cables from the throttle linkage.
12. Disconnect all hoses and wires from the gearbox (ground wire bolt is indicated by an arrow). Mark the ends of all detachable hoses and wires to avoid confusion during installation.
13. Remove cooling fans. Drain the coolant, remove the radiator and all cooling and heating system hoses.
14. Disconnect the shift lever cable from the transmission.
15. Loosen the front wheel bolts, raise the vehicle and secure it on stands. Mount the engine on a lift. Remove the front wheels.
16. Remove the exhaust manifold bracket.
17. Remove the front section of the exhaust pipe.
18. Remove protective shields.
19. Drain the transmission fluid.
20. Remove the axles.
21. Remove the front engine mount bolts.
22. Tighten the nuts of the left transmission support.
23. Remove the rear engine mount.
24. On models equipped with power steering, disconnect the steering gear from the suspension.
25. Remove the four stabilizer bar bracket bolts.
26. Tie the steering gear to the body and unscrew the bolts. The steering gear must not interfere with the removal of the gearbox.
27. Remove the suspension cross member bolts. When removing the cross member, do not forget to make alignment marks.
28. Install a jack under the gearbox.
29. Remove the stiffeners from the left and right sides of the gearbox.
30. Remove the bolts (indicated by arrows) converter covers.
31. Remove the bolts securing the torque converter to the drive plate.
32. Remove the bolts securing the top of the transmission housing to the engine.
33. Remove the bolts securing the bottom of the transmission housing to the engine.
34. Disconnect the gearbox from the engine and carefully lower it.
Installation
The gearbox is installed in the reverse order of removal.
