Wheel brake cylinder — removal, repair and installation [Toyota Camry XV10]

Removal



1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on stands.

2. Remove the brake drum.

3. Using a clamp, pinch the brake hose at the point closest to the wheel cylinder.



4. Remove any dirt around the junction of the brake hose and the rear of the wheel cylinder. Unscrew the union nut. Carefully remove the brake pipe from the wheel cylinder and plug it.

5. Unscrew the two bolts securing the wheel cylinder to the brake shield. Carefully remove the wheel cylinder.

Repair



1. Clean dust and dirt from the wheel cylinder.

2. Remove the dust boots from each end of the wheel cylinder.

3. Remove both pistons with sealing rings from the brake cylinder.

4. Check the condition of the pistons and brake cylinder for wear, corrosion and other defects.

5. Install the sealing rings on the piston, lubricate them with clean brake fluid and install the pistons into the brake cylinder.

6. Install the dust caps.

Installation



1. Wipe the brake shield, install the brake pipe on the brake cylinder and tighten the union nut two turns.

2. Screw in the bolts securing the working brake cylinder. Finally tighten the nut securing the brake pipe.



3. Remove the clamp from the brake hose.

4. Install the brake drum.

5. Bleed the brake system.
