Replacing the handbrake cable [Toyota Camry XV10]

Rear cable



1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and secure it on stands. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.

2. Check that the handbrake is fully released and remove the brake disc or brake drum.

3. On models with drum brakes, remove the brake shoes and disconnect the handbrake cable from the lever on the brake shoe. On models with rear disc brakes, remove the handbrake shoes and disconnect the handbrake cable from the lever on the rear brake shoe.


4. Unscrew the two bolts securing the cable housing to the brake shield.

5. Under the vehicle, unscrew the bolts of all handbrake cable fastenings.

6. Remove the center exhaust pipe.



7. Loosen the clamp bolts and remove the front sections of the rear handbrake cables from the clamps.



8. Disconnect the front sections of the rear handbrake cables from the compensator.

9. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

10. Adjust the handbrake cable.

Intermediate cable



Intermediate handbrake cable





1 – intermediate handbrake cable; 2 – gasket; 3 – casing; 4 – bracket; 5 – intermediate lever; 6 – axis; 7 – bushings; 8 – bushing; 9 – shaft; 10 – bushing; 11 – gasket; 12 – mounting bracket; 13 – roller; 14 – bushing; 15 – bushing; 16 – compensator


1. Remove the center console.

2. Release the handbrake lever, unscrew the lock nut and the set nut and remove the handbrake cable from the intermediate lever.

3. Working under the vehicle, remove the retainer of the rear part of the intermediate cable from the compensator, turn it 90° and remove it from the compensator. Remove the intermediate handbrake cable from under the vehicle.

4. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Adjust the handbrake cable.

Front handbrake cable





Front handbrake cable
1 – Parking brake switch; 2 – mounting bracket; 3 – pin; 4 – handbrake lever; 5 – handbrake pedal; 6 – pedal pad; 7 – Front handbrake cable




1. Remove the center console.



2. Disconnect the front handbrake cable from the intermediate lever.

3. Disconnect the handbrake switch.

4. Remove the cotter pin, push out the pin and disconnect the front portion of the front handbrake cable from the handbrake pedal assembly.

5. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
