The ECM electronic control unit contains a built-in self-diagnostic system that detects and recognizes faults. When a fault occurs, the "check engine" indicator light comes on, the fault is identified and a diagnostic code is recorded. The "check engine" warning light, which is located on the instrument cluster, comes on when the ignition is turned on.

After the engine starts, the "check engine" indicator light should go out. If the light remains on after the engine starts, there is a fault in the electronic system.

1. To determine fault codes, ensure that the battery is fully charged, the throttle is fully closed, the transmission is in neutral, all electrical consumers are turned off, and the engine is at operating temperature.

2. Turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine.

3. Using an additional wire, connect contacts TE1 and E1 of the control connector.

4. The fault code is determined by the number of times the light blinks. The first digit of the code is determined by the number of times the light blinks, then after a pause the second digit of the code is determined by the number of times the light blinks. For example, code 24. The light blinks 2 times, then after a pause 4 more times.

5. If several faults are recorded in the electronic unit's memory, they will be displayed in turn.

6. To clear the stored fault code from memory, remove the 15A EFI fuse for at least 10 seconds with the ignition off.

7. The fault code can also be cleared by removing the ground cable from the battery.
