Caution: Do not allow the engine to run at high speed for a long time or accelerate sharply when the engine is not warmed up.


Before launch



1. Apply the parking brake.

2. Turn off unnecessary lights and auxiliary equipment.

3. For models with manual transmission:
  • a) Press the clutch pedal all the way down and move the gearshift lever to neutral position.
  • b) Keep the clutch pedal depressed until the engine starts.

4. For models with automatic transmission:
  • a) Set the selector to position "P". When restarting (the engine stalled) set the selector to the "N" position.
  • b) Press the brake pedal and hold it until you start moving.

Normal startup method



1.1 (Petrol engines) Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position. Without pressing the accelerator pedal, crank the engine by turning the ignition key to the "START" position. Release the ignition key when the engine starts.

2. (Diesel engines) Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and make sure that the cold start assist indicator is on (glow plugs) lights up. Keep the key in the "ON" position until the indicator goes out. While pressing the accelerator pedal approximately halfway (all the way "to the floor" if the weather is very cold), crank the engine by turning the ignition key to the "START" position. Release the ignition key and accelerator pedal when the engine starts.



Caution: Do not crank the engine for more than 15 seconds at a time. This may cause the starter and electrical connections to overheat. If the engine does not start within 15 seconds, wait about one minute before trying again.


3. After the engine warm-up speed has been automatically reduced, the vehicle is ready to drive.

Note: If the weather is frosty, let the engine warm up for a few more minutes before driving. But if necessary, you can start driving immediately after reducing the high engine warm-up speed.


Removal air and condensate from the fuel system (diesel engines)



1. Bleeding the fuel system. If you run out of fuel and the engine stalls, the engine may not start after refueling. In this case, pump fuel using the hand priming pump until you feel more resistance.



2. If the indicator lights up and the sound signal sounds indicating the presence of water in the fuel filter
  • a) Place a small tray under the drain plug or drain hose to collect the water
  • b) Turn the drain plug counterclockwise approximately 2-2.5 turns (More weakening will result in water leaking out).
  • c) Pump fuel using the hand priming pump until fuel starts to flow out.
  • d) After draining the water, tighten the drain plug by hand.

Caution: Do not use a tool when tightening the drain plug.




If the engine does not start



1. Before performing checks, make sure that the startup procedure has been performed correctly (see the relevant section) and the presence of sufficient fuel in the tank.

2. If the engine crankshaft does not turn or turns too slowly:
  • a) Check that the battery terminals are securely tightened and clean.
  • b) If the battery terminals are OK, turn on the interior lighting. If there is no lighting, it is dim, or it goes out when the engine is cranked by the starter, the battery is discharged. Perform a jump start using a booster battery or by pushing (towing). A diesel engine vehicle cannot be pushed (towing) if the battery is too discharged.
  • c) If the lighting is normal, but the engine does not start, then the engine is faulty.

Caution: Do not attempt to start the engine by prolonged towing or pushing. The timing belt may jump a few teeth and cause the piston to hit the valves. In addition, the catalytic converter may fail, overheat and cause ignition (fire).


3. If the engine crankshaft turns normally, but the engine does not start:
  • a) Check the tightness of the connectors (e.g. spark plug connections (or incandescent), ignition coils, distributor, fuel shut-off valve (diesel).
  • b) If the connectors are OK, then the spark plugs can be "flooded" (gasoline engines).

Starting the engine (if the spark plugs are "flooded" - gasoline engines)



1. While pressing the accelerator pedal, crank the engine with the ignition key in the "START" position for approximately 15 seconds. Do not pump the pedal, just hold it down.



2. Release the ignition key and the accelerator pedal. Then try to start the engine without pressing the accelerator pedal.

3. If the engine does not start within 15 seconds of cranking the crankshaft, release the ignition key and wait a few minutes.

4. Try to start the engine If the engine still does not start, then:
  • a) Remove the spark plugs and dry the wet electrodes
  • b) Turn the ignition key to the "START" position for approximately 15 seconds while keeping the accelerator pedal depressed.
  • c) Install the spark plugs.

5. Try starting the engine without pressing the accelerator pedal.

If the engine still does not start, it is faulty and requires adjustment or repair.

Caution: Do not crank the engine for more than 15 seconds at a time. This may cause overheating of the starter and electrical circuit connections.
