The shift pattern is conventional as shown above.
Press the clutch pedal all the way down while shifting and then slowly release it. Do not keep your foot on the pedal while driving as this may cause clutch failure. And don't use the clutch to hold the car when stopping on a hill - use the parking brake for that.
Upshifting or downshifting too quickly will overload the engine and possibly knock. Constantly revving the engine up to maximum speed in every gear will cause excessive engine wear and high fuel consumption.
Maximum allowable speeds
Entering freeways or overtaking slow moving vehicles may require maximum acceleration. Be sure to observe the following maximum permitted speeds for each gear:

If it is difficult to get into reverse, put the transmission in neutral, release the clutch, and then try again.
When towing a trailer, to maintain engine braking efficiency, do not shift into 5th gear.
