
The gear shift pattern is generally accepted as shown above.
Press the clutch pedal all the way down when shifting, then release it slowly. Don't keep your foot on the pedal while driving - this can cause clutch failure. And don't use the clutch to hold the car when stopped on an incline - use the parking brake for that.
Shifting up or down too quickly will overload the engine and possibly cause detonation. Constantly revving the engine to maximum speed in each gear will cause excessive engine wear and high fuel consumption.
Maximum permissible speeds
Entering a freeway or passing slower moving traffic may require maximum acceleration. Be sure to maintain the following maximum speeds for each gear:

If you have difficulty engaging reverse, place the transmission in neutral, release the clutch, and then try again.
When towing a trailer, do not engage fifth gear to maintain engine braking effectiveness.
