The sequence of tightening the bolts of the main bearing caps (4-cylinder engines)
Bolt tightening sequence for main bearing caps (6-cylinder engines)
The sequence of tightening the side bolts of the main bearing caps (6-cylinder engines)
Checking the lubrication clearance of the main bearings
1. Install new main bearing shells.
2. Clean the crankshaft, bearings and oil holes, then carefully install the crankshaft onto the bearings.
3. Lay a piece of plastic on each of the main bearings along the axis of the shaft.
4. Install the main bearing caps being careful not to move the plastic. Tighten the fixing bolts of the covers to the required tightening torque in the sequence shown (see fig. The sequence of tightening the bolts of the main bearing caps (4-cylinder engines), pic. Bolt tightening sequence for main bearing caps (6-cylinder engines), pic. The sequence of tightening the side bolts of the main bearing caps (6-cylinder engines). Do not turn the crankshaft.
5. On 6-cylinder engines, after you have tightened the bolts to the required first stage torque, tighten another quarter turn.
6. Loosen the screws and carefully remove the covers.
7. Compare the crushed film width with a special scale to determine the lubrication gap.
8. If the clearance is not within specifications, install a different size of bearings. Bearings can be turned if necessary.
9. Carefully remove traces of film from the shaft and bearings.
Final installation of the crankshaft
1. Carefully remove the crankshaft.
2. Clean the surface of the bearings and lubricate them with grease or engine oil. Check that the crankshaft bearings are clean and reinstall the crankshaft. Lubricate and install the lower bushings. Install thrust washers.
3. On 4-cylinder engines, install thrust washers in the third bearing cap, and on 6-cylinder engines, in the second bearing cap.
4. Install the main bearing caps. The arrows on the covers must point towards the front of the engine. Insert and tighten all main bearing cap bolts to the correct torque in the sequence shown (see fig. The sequence of tightening the bolts of the main bearing caps (4-cylinder engines), pic. Bolt tightening sequence for main bearing caps (6-cylinder engines), pic. The sequence of tightening the side bolts of the main bearing caps (6-cylinder engines) .
5. Remember to install new sealing washers on the side hex bolts.
6. Turn the crankshaft by hand several times and check for ease of movement.
7. Check crankshaft end play and install rear oil seal.
