In response to a severe side impact, the SRS side airbags inflate together with the seat belts to reduce injury. Side airbags (SRS) help mainly to reduce injuries to the chest of the driver or front passenger. The SRS side airbag on the passenger side is activated even if there is no passenger in the front seat.
Warning! The SRS side airbags inflate with considerable force. To avoid possible death or serious injury if they are triggered, the driver and front passenger must:
- - be properly fastened with their seat belts;
- - sit straight in your seats, leaning back on the seat.
The SRS side airbag system may not deploy if the vehicle is subjected to a side collision at a certain angle or a collision at a point on the vehicle body where the impact does not affect the passenger compartment, as shown in the illustration.
The SRS side airbags are designed to inflate in the event of a severe side impact affecting the cabin area.
For the safety of all passengers, they must always wear their seat belts properly.
The SRS side airbags are designed to not inflate if the vehicle is subjected to a front or rear collision, a rollover, or a low speed side collision.
Pic. 1.110. Side SRS components
The SRS side airbag system consists of the following main components, the location of which is shown in Figure 1.110:
- 1. Control lamp of the SRS system;
- 2. Side airbag modules (airbag and injection device);
- 3. Side airbag sensors;
- 4. Node of sensors of pneumopillows of safety.
The SRS side airbag system is controlled by the airbag sensor assembly. The airbag sensor assembly consists of allowable impact sensors and airbag deployment sensors.
In a severe side impact, the side airbag sensor activates the side airbag inflators. During this time, a chemical reaction in the inflators rapidly fills the airbags with non-toxic gas to keep passengers from moving to the side.
This SRS side airbag system has a warning light to inform the driver of a malfunction. If one of the following conditions occurs, this means that the airbags are defective. Contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible to have your vehicle serviced.
- The indicator light comes on when the key is turned to the «ON», or remains lit for more than 6 s.
- The indicator light comes on while driving.
