The VVT-i system (Fig. 2.49) is designed to control the intake valve drive camshaft in a wide range of 50° (crankshaft rotation angles), to ensure that the valve opening or closing moment is optimally matched to the engine operating conditions, thereby increasing torque in all speed ranges and fuel economy and reducing emissions of harmful substances with exhaust gases. The actual opening or closing moment of the intake valve is determined by the camshaft position sensor for continuous comparison with the target opening or closing moment of the valve and the formation of the corresponding control action.
