Removal

1. Remove the axle shaft.

2. Clamp the axle shaft in a vice using soft spacers and check for radial play and smooth movement of the joint in all directions. Replace the worn boot by performing the following procedures.

Disassembly

(The information was taken from a web portal www.ToyotaMAN.ru)

1. Remove the cover clamp by cutting it.

2. Remove the cover from the hinge groove by prying the cover edge with a screwdriver. Cut off a badly damaged cover. Remove the cover from the hinge housing and remove the housing.

Attention! An intermediate shaft is fixed to the hinge housing on the right half-axle.

3. Mark the relative positions of the joint crosspiece and the axle shaft.

4. Remove the crosspiece retaining ring.

5. Using a brass spacer, knock the crosspiece of the hinge off the axle shaft. This is necessary to put the inner and outer covers on the axle shaft. Do not remove the outer hinge.

6. Remove both covers.

Examination

1. Clean the removed parts, completely remove old grease, check for damage to the bearing balls. If there are signs of wear on the surface, the mating surfaces will also be damaged. Inner joints are supplied as spare parts separately, outer joints - assembled with the axle shaft.

2. Check the condition of the intermediate support bearing.

Assembly

1. Place the crosspiece on the splines so that the notch on the splines faces the axle shaft.

2. Place grease in the hinge housing, place the housing on the crosspiece and apply the remaining grease.

3. Place the cover and clamp on the axle shaft, insert the crosspiece into the housing and apply the remaining grease.

4. Make sure that the edges of the boots fit into the grooves on the axle shaft.

5. Adjust the axle shaft length (see subsection 8.3.1.), moving the inner joint, set the standard length of the axle shaft.

6. Straighten the cover by inserting a screwdriver between the cover and the outer race of the hinge.

7. Secure the cover with a clamp using special pliers.
