All cars are equipped with 2 airbags, one of which (from the driver's side) mounted in the center of the steering wheel, and the other on the right side of the instrument panel. The system also includes a sensor and control unit mounted in the center of the car in front of the floor section.

Driver Side Safety Module

The module consists of a packed cushion and a pumping device (reactor), which is located under the cushion and connected to it by an opening through which gas is supplied when a signal is received. The signal is supplied via a cable wound into a flexible spiral around the steering wheel shaft, regardless of the steering wheel angle. The cushion is inflated with nitrogen, which is formed as a result of the reaction of copper oxide and sodium azide.

Passenger side safety module

The module, located above the glove compartment, includes a pumping device (reactor), a folded cushion, a reactor, and a trim panel. The passenger cushion is significantly larger than the driver's cushion. The outer finish of the cushion cover matches the trim of the front panel. The cover has a seam that breaks when gas is pumped into the cushion.

Side airbags are installed on cars of 1998-99, they are located in the backs of the seats on the outer edge. The sensor is mounted in the body, in the lower part of the door pillar.

Sensor and diagnostics unit

The unit provides power and airbag operation even when the battery is disconnected. The unit checks the status of the safety system. The system indicator lamp (aIR-BAG lamp) first lights up and goes out if the system is working properly. If the system is faulty, the lamp continues to light or flash (or a beep sounds). In this case, the car should be immediately taken to a service station for inspection.

Warning! Failure to take safety precautions may result in accidental deployment of the airbag and serious injury.

When performing any work near the steering column or any unit of the system, it is necessary to disable the airbags. To do this, do the following:
  • set the wheels to the straight ahead position and turn the ignition key to the LOCK position;
  • disconnect the battery from ground;
  • start work after at least 2 minutes, i.e. after the time required for the capacitor to discharge.

When handling the airbag container, always keep the lined side of the container facing away from you. Never place the container with the lined side down. Never measure the resistance of any unit of the airbag system, as the airbag may be triggered by the ohmmeter battery.

Before performing welding work, disconnect the yellow airbag connector, which is located under the steering column near the switch cluster connector (from the driver's side) or a box for small items (from the passenger side).

It is prohibited to throw away the container with the pillow.
