Normal driving mode (a)

Caution: When moving the selector lever to position "D", do not press the accelerator pedal.

1. Set the selector lever to the "P" or "N" position and start the engine. In the selector positions "R", "2", "L" or "D" the engine does not start.

2. Set the operating mode switch to the "NORM" position.

For normal driving, the "NORM" operating mode is recommended, which saves fuel. The "PWR" mode is recommended for dynamic driving, with gear shifting occurring at higher engine speeds.

3. To disable the multiplier (overdrive) press the multiplier switch.

4. Press the brake pedal and move the selector lever to position "D".

5. Release the brake pedal and slowly press the accelerator pedal.

When the accelerator pedal is fully pressed and held in this position, a forced downshift occurs.

Engine braking (b)

1. Turn off the multiplier switch (this is only possible with the selector lever in the "D" position). The "O/D OFF" indicator light will flash and third gear will be engaged.

2. Set the selector lever to position "2", this will engage second gear and when the engine speed decreases, engine braking will be performed.

3. Set the selector lever to the "L" position, which will engage first gear and, when the engine speed decreases, maximum engine braking will be achieved.

Vehicle speed at which the selector must be shifted when engine braking

Engine 5S-FE
"2"105 km/h
"L"50 km/h
Engine 3VZ-FE
"2"115 km/h
"L"52 km/h

Positions "2" and "L" of the selector lever (c).

This position is recommended for long climbs and descents.

Automatically shifts up and down 1st and 2nd gear depending on engine load and road speed, 3rd gear remains locked to avoid unnecessary upshifts. This also increases engine braking efficiency.

Maximum speeds for driving in the corresponding gears

Engine 5S-FE
"2"115 km/h
"L"65 km/h
Engine 3VZ-FE
"2"115 km/h
"L"52 km/h

Reverse "R" (d)

Caution! Do not move the selector lever to the "R" position until the vehicle has come to a complete stop.

1. The reverse position should only be engaged when the vehicle is completely stopped and the engine is idling.

2. Before shifting to the "R" position from the "P" or "N" positions, press the brake pedal. In the "R" position, with the ignition on, the reversing lights are on.

Parking lock "P" (e)

The drive wheels are mechanically locked.

The selector should only be moved to this position when the vehicle is completely stopped.

1. Stop the vehicle completely.

2. Press the brake pedal and in this position move the selector lever to the "P" position, then release the brake.

Continuous lighting of the "O/D OFF" indicator light (f)

If the "O/D OFF" indicator light is on, contact a TOYOTA dealer as soon as possible.
