Removal
Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the coolant from the engine crankcase and from the radiator.
3. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
4. Remove the throttle body, fuel injectors and fuel line.
5. Remove the intake manifold.
6. Remove the exhaust manifold.
7. Remove the timing belt, camshaft sprocket and upper idler pulley.
8. Remove the upper section of the rear timing belt cover.
9. Remove the camshafts and valve lifters.
10. Remove the generator and distributor.
11. Remove the power steering pump bolts. Move the pump to the side without disconnecting the hoses from it.
12. Disconnect all wires, tubes, hoses and cables attached to the cylinder head.
13. Loosen and remove the head bolts in the reverse order of the sequence shown in the figure Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence. Loosen the bolts a quarter turn at a time.

14. Remove the cylinder head.
Installation

1. Thoroughly clean and wipe with acetone the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block. If the surfaces are scratched or damaged in any way, they must be treated in a specialized workshop.
2. Using a suitable tap, clean the threads in the cylinder block. Using a suitable die, clean the cylinder head bolts.
3. Install a new head gasket and install the head.
4. Lubricate the bolts with clean engine oil.
5. Insert the bolts and tighten them to the specified torque in the sequence shown in the figure Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence.
6. Install the remaining parts.
