Pic. 2.111. Pushing the piston ring: 1 - piston ring
In order to check the clearance in the piston ring lock, install the ring in the block cylinder. The piston push a ring from a surface of the block of cylinders, as it is shown in drawing 2.111.
Pic. 2.112. Lock gap measurement
Measure the gap in the lock with a flat feeler gauge (pic. 2.112).
If the clearance in the lock is greater than the maximum, replace the piston ring. If the gap in the lock is greater than the maximum even with a new piston ring, replace the cylinder block.
Rated Clearance:

- 1AZ-FE - 0.30–0.40 mm;
- 2AZ-FE - 0.22–0.32 mm;
- compression ring No. 2 -
- 1AZ-FE - 0.47–0.62 mm;
- 2AZ-FE - 0.50–0.60 mm;
- oil ring -
- 1AZ-FE - 0.10–0.35 mm;
- 2AZ-FE - 0.10–0.35 mm.
Limit clearance:
- compression ring #1 -
- 1AZ-FE - 0.89 mm;
- 2AZ-FE - 0.89 mm;
- compression ring No. 2 -
- 1AZ-FE - 1.37 mm;
- 2AZ-FE - 1.37 mm;
- oil ring -
- 1AZ-FE - 0.73 mm;
- 2AZ-FE - 0.73 mm.
