SRS airbags (additional retention system) designed to provide the driver and passenger in front with additional protection in addition to the basic protection provided by the seat belts.
The passenger airbag is activated even if there is no passenger in the front seat. Make sure the seat belt is fastened properly.
Warning! An occupant sitting too close to the steering wheel or instrument panel may be seriously injured or even killed when the airbag inflates. We strongly recommend the following:
- - The driver should sit as far away from the steering wheel as possible for normal driving.
- - The front passenger should be as far away from the instrument panel as possible.
- - All passengers must wear their seat belts properly.
This indicator comes on when the ignition key is turned to the "ACC" or "ON". It goes out after about 6 seconds. This means that the secondary restraint airbags are working properly.
This warning light system monitors the front SRS airbag sensors, airbag sensor assembly, inflators, warning light, wiring harness, and power supplies.
The SRS airbag is designed to deploy in response to a severe frontal impact within the shaded area between the arrows in the illustration.
There are times when the SRS airbag will not deploy in such an impact, but the occupant will not be seriously injured with a properly fastened seat belt.
The SRS airbag will deploy if the magnitude of the impact exceeds the calculated limit, comparable to approximately a direct impact with an immovable barrier that does not move or deform at a vehicle speed of 25 km/h.
If the amount of exposure is below the specified threshold level, the SRS airbag may not deploy.
However, the speed threshold will be significantly higher if the vehicle collides with an object such as a parked vehicle or a road sign that may move or deform, or in a lower collision (for example, when the front of the car "hit" underneath the truck).
In a collision on the verge of an acceptable level for the sensitivity of the sensors of the airbag system, it may be that only one of them will deploy.
The SRS air bag is designed not to inflate if the vehicle is subjected to a side or rear impact, roll over, or is involved in a low speed frontal collision.
The SRS airbags may deploy if there is a severe impact on the underside of the vehicle. Some examples are shown in the figure.
Main components of the SRS airbag system
1. Front airbag sensor
2. SRS warning light
3. Passenger airbag module (air bag and blower)
4. The device of airbag sensors
5. Air bag module for driver (air bag and blower)
The device of sensors of air bags consists of sensors of admissible impact and sensors of operation of air bags.
In response to a strong front impact, sensors detect the deceleration and actuate the airbag pressure pumps. A chemical reaction in the pressure pumps then causes the airbags to instantly fill with non-toxic nitrogen gas to keep passengers from moving forward.
When the air bags are inflated, a rather loud noise will be heard and smoke with a non-toxic gas will be emitted. This gas is not flammable. It is harmless, but for those with delicate skin, it may cause minor skin irritation. Be sure to rinse off residue to prevent even slight skin irritation.
Deployment of airbags occurs in a fraction of a second as the airbag is inflated with considerable force. While the system is intended to reduce serious injury, it can cause minor burns and abrasions.
Air bag unit parts (steering wheel hub, instrument panel) may be hot for several minutes, but the airbag itself will not be hot. Pneumopillows are calculated on single filling.
A collision strong enough to inflate the airbags could shatter the windshield and the vehicle's tie rods. In vehicles with passenger airbags, the windshield may also be damaged.
The airbag system has a service warning indicator to inform the driver of functional problems.
If any of the following occurs, it means the airbags are defective. Have your Toyota dealer check your vehicle as soon as possible.
The indicator light does not come on when the ignition key is turned to the "ACC" or "ON" or stays on.
The indicator light comes on while driving.
Attention! In the following cases, contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible:
- - deployed SRS airbags;
- - car front (shaded in the figure) was involved in the accident, but not to the extent that the airbags of the secondary restraint system inflated;
- - section of the steering wheel cushion or airbag cover in front of the seated passenger (shaded in the figure) scratched, cracked or damaged.
