Removing
Attention! If your radio has an anti-theft code, check that you have the pairing codes before disconnecting the battery.
Attention! On models since 1993, the airbag system is disabled if the battery is disconnected for an extended period. If the airbag warning light comes on and stays on after reconnecting the battery, take it to a specialist workshop to restore the system to normal.
Drive elements of the gas distribution mechanism of a four-cylinder engine
1 – the top casing of a gear belt; 2 - camshaft pulley; 3 - idle pulley; 4 - spring; 5 - oil pump pulley; 6 - idle pulley No. 2; 7 - crankshaft pulley; 8 - toothed belt guide; 9 - toothed belt; 10 – the bottom casing of a gear belt; 11 - crankshaft drive belt pulley
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery.
2. Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the right front wheel and protective wheel arch.
3. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
4. Unscrew the spark plugs and remove the drive belts.
5. Remove the generator together with an arm.
6. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir and cruise control actuator bolts and move them aside.
7. Support the engine with a jack over a block of wood and remove the right support and support rod.
8. Unscrew the bolts securing the upper casing of the toothed belt, move the wiring harness to the side and remove the upper casing along with the gasket.
9. Set the piston of the first cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke, while the small hole in the camshaft pulley should be aligned with the TDC mark on the bearing cap.
10. If the toothed belt is to be reinstalled, note its relative position in relation to the camshaft pulley and the direction of its rotation.
11. Loosen the upper idler pulley bolt and remove the spring. If it is necessary to replace the camshaft O-ring or remove the cylinder head, slide the toothed belt off the camshaft pulley without removing it from the crankshaft pulley.
12. If the camshaft pulley is worn or damaged, remove the head cover and, while holding the camshaft from turning with a large wrench, unscrew the camshaft pulley mounting bolt.
13. Fix the engine crankshaft from turning by the teeth of the flywheel ring gear and unscrew the bolt securing the crankshaft pulley.
14. Using a puller or pry bar, remove the pulley from the crankshaft.
15. Remove the lower toothed belt cover along with the gasket and remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley.
16. If the toothed belt is to be reinstalled, mark the relative position of the belt and the crankshaft pulley.
17. Remove the toothed belt from the crankshaft pulley.
18. If the crankshaft pulley is worn or damaged, or the front crankshaft O-ring needs to be replaced, remove the pulley from the crankshaft.
Inspection
Attention! Do not twist or bend the toothed belt. Do not expose the toothed belt to oil, coolant or fuel.
Attention! If the timing belt breaks while the engine is running, it is possible that the pistons hit the valves, causing the valves to be bent. Check valve clearances. On bent valves, valve clearances will be much larger than required.
1. Remove the idler pulleys and check the condition of their bearings. Check the condition of the spring and check the free length of the spring.
2. If toothed belt teeth are chipped, the ignition distributor, water pump, oil pump, or camshaft may be stuck.
3. If there is significant wear or delamination on the outer surface of the timing belt, check the condition of the idler treadmill.
4. If there is wear or damage on only one side of the belt, check the toothed belt guide and the alignment of the toothed belt pulleys.
5. If there are any defects on the toothed belt, it must be replaced. Periodic replacement of the toothed belt should be carried out after 100,000 km of the car's run.
Installation
1. If the idler pulleys were removed, install them and the extension spring. While stretching the spring, move the upper idler pulley to the left as far as possible and temporarily secure with a bolt.
2. Check the alignment marks of the camshaft pulley and crankshaft.
3. Sequentially install the toothed belt on the crankshaft, oil pump, water pump and idler pulleys. If the belt is being reinstalled, align the previously made marks on the timing belt and pulleys.
4. Install the timing belt guide to the crankshaft pulley. In this case, the convex side of the guide should be directed towards the crankshaft pulley.
5. Install the lower timing belt cover and crankshaft pulley.
6. Install the toothed belt onto the camshaft pulley while keeping the front branch of the toothed belt under tension at all times.
7. Loosen the top idler pulley bolt. In this case, the spring will turn the idler pulley and tension the toothed belt.
8. If the timing belt tension spring is silver, slowly turn the crankshaft clockwise two full turns and tighten the upper idler pulley bolt. If the timing belt tension spring is green, turn the crankshaft 1 7/8 turns and tighten the timing belt top idler pulley bolt.
9. Recheck the alignment of the alignment marks.
10. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
