Attention! Work on the exhaust manifold must be done on a cold engine.
Attention! If your radio has an anti-theft code, check that you have the pairing codes before disconnecting the battery.
Attention! On models since 1993, the airbag system is disabled if the battery is disconnected for an extended period. If the airbag warning light comes on and stays on after reconnecting the battery, take it to a specialist workshop to restore the system to normal.
Removing the EGR pipe from the rear manifold of the 1MZ-FE engine
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery.
2. Spray oil on all exhaust manifold connections and allow oil to soak in.
3. Remove the oxygen sensors from the front and rear manifolds.
4. Remove the EGR pipe from the exhaust manifold.
5. On the 3VZ-FE engine, remove the heat shields from the intake manifold.
6. Unscrew the nuts securing the exhaust manifold and remove it from the cylinder head.
7. Inspect the exhaust manifold for cracks.
8. Clean the mating surfaces of the exhaust manifold and cylinder head.
Installation
9. Install new gaskets on the cylinder head struts.
10. Install the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head and secure with nuts. Tighten the nuts in several stages from the center to the periphery.
11. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
