Front wheel drives operate under the most severe and unfavorable conditions, as they are located in the zone of greatest exposure to moisture and dirt and transmit torque to the wheels under constantly changing angles and loads. High precision manufacturing of hinge parts, the use of high-quality materials and lubricants ensure reliable operation of the unit in these conditions, but only if the seals are kept tight. Therefore, maintenance of the front wheel drive is mainly limited to periodic inspection and checking the condition of the protective covers.
Removal

1. Remove the ground cable from the battery.
Warning: If your radio has an anti-theft code, make sure you have the connection codes before disconnecting the battery.
Caution! On models from 1993 onwards, the airbag system is disabled if the battery is disconnected for an extended period of time. If the airbag warning light comes on and remains on after the battery is reconnected, contact a specialist workshop to restore the system to working order.
2. Apply the parking brake.

3. Remove the cotter pin and unscrew the lock nut securing the drive shaft to the hub.

4. Loosen the nut securing the drive shaft to the hub a few turns.
5. Loosen the wheel nuts, lift the front of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the wheel. Completely unscrew the nut securing the drive shaft to the hub.

6. If the left drive shaft joint is removed to replace the boot on models with 3VZ-FE or 1 MZ-FE engines, loosen the 6 bolts securing the inner joint to the differential flange or intermediate shaft flange.
7. Remove the nut securing the steering rod to the steering knuckle and, using a ball joint puller, remove the steering rod from the steering knuckle.
8. Remove the nuts securing the lower steering knuckle joint to the wishbone and separate the lower arm from the ball joint.

9. Move the hub away from the vehicle and remove the outer end of the drive shaft from the hub.

10. If the drive shaft is tight in the hub, temporarily tighten the hub nut and use a hammer to tap the drive shaft out of the hub while pulling the car wheel outward.
11. If you are removing the inner drive shaft joint from the transmission, secured with a snap ring, drain the transmission oil first.

12. On models with 3VZ-FE or 1MZ-FE engines, unscrew the 6 bolts securing the inner joint to the transmission drive flange and remove the joint. If the drive shaft is being removed to replace the differential seal, remove the drive flange from the transmission. To do this, insert a pry bar between the drive flange and the transmission housing and, while an assistant pulls the drive shaft outward, knock the drive flange out of the differential axle gear with a sharp blow to the end of the pry bar.
13. When removing the left drive shaft inner joint on models with 5S-FE engines, remove the drive shaft from the transmission. To do this, insert a pry bar between the inner joint and the transmission housing and, while an assistant pulls the drive shaft outward, knock the drive shaft out of the differential axle gear with a strong, sharp blow to the end of the pry bar.

14. To remove the inner joint of the drive shaft, unscrew the intermediate bearing mounting bolt.

15. Remove the compression ring and pull the drive shaft outward sharply. This should disengage the drive shaft from the differential axle gear.

16. In this case, the drive shaft should disengage from the differential axle gear.
17. Do not lower the vehicle onto the wheels with one or both drive shafts removed, as this will damage the bearings. If you need to move the vehicle with the drive shafts removed, install a bolt with a nut and two large washers in the hub instead of the drive shaft (see Fig. Installing a temporary bolt instead of a drive shaft in the front wheel hub).
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points.
1. Tighten the bolts securing the inner joint of the drive shaft to the transmission drive flange to the specified torque.
2. When installing the left joint with a snap ring, replace the snap ring on the end of the drive shaft. Install the drive shaft into the differential, aligning the splines of the drive shaft with the grooves of the differential axle gears. Insert the drive shaft into the gearbox until it stops.
3. Align the splines on the drive shaft with the slots in the hub and insert the drive shaft into the hub.
4. Fill the gearbox with oil.
