Removing
Arrangement of a compression ring of fastening of the intermediate bearing of the right power shaft
Installing a temporary bolt instead of the drive shaft in the front wheel hub
1 - washer with a diameter of 50 mm; 2 - washer with a diameter of 45 mm; 3 - nut; 4 - bolt
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery.
Attention! If your radio has an anti-theft code, check that you have the pairing codes before disconnecting the battery.
Attention! On models since 1993, the airbag system is disabled if the battery is disconnected for an extended period. If the airbag warning light comes on and stays on after reconnecting the battery, take it to a specialist workshop to restore the system to normal.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Remove the cotter pin and unscrew the locknut securing the drive shaft to the hub.
4. Unscrew the nut securing the drive shaft to the hub a few turns.
5. Loosen the wheel nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands. Remove the wheel. Completely unscrew the nut securing the drive shaft to the hub.
6. If the left drive shaft joint is removed to replace the protective boot on models with 3VZ-FE or 1 MZ-FE engines, loosen the 6 bolts securing the inner joint to the differential flange or intermediate shaft flange.
7. Unscrew the nut securing the tie rod to the steering knuckle and, using a ball joint remover, remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
8. Remove the nuts securing the lower knuckle joint to the transverse arm and separate the lower arm from the ball joint.
9. Move the hub away from the vehicle and remove the outer end of the drive shaft from the hub.
10. If the drive shaft is firmly seated in the hub, temporarily tighten the hub nut and use a hammer to knock the drive shaft out of the hub while pulling the vehicle wheel outward.
11. If you remove the driveshaft inner joint from the gearbox, secured with a retaining ring, first drain the oil from the gearbox.
12. On models with 3VZ-FE or 1MZ-FE engines, unscrew the 6 bolts securing the inner joint to the transmission drive flange and remove the joint. If the drive shaft is being removed to replace the differential O-ring, remove the drive flange from the transmission. To do this, insert a mount between the drive flange and the gearbox housing, and while the assistant pulls the drive shaft outward, with a sharp blow on the end of the mount, knock the drive flange out of engagement in the differential side gear.
13. When removing the left drive shaft inner joint on models with 5S-FE engines, remove the drive shaft from the transmission. To do this, insert a pry bar between the inner hinge and the gearbox housing, and while the assistant pulls the drive shaft outward, with a strong sharp blow on the end of the pry bar, disengage the drive shaft from the differential side gear.
14. To remove the inner hinge of the drive shaft, unscrew the bolt securing the intermediate bearing.
15. Remove the ferrule and pull the driveshaft out sharply. In this case, the drive shaft must disengage in the differential side gear.
16. In this case, the drive shaft must disengage in the differential side gear.
17. Do not lower the vehicle on wheels with two or one of the drive shafts removed, as this will damage the bearings. If it is necessary to move the vehicle with the drive shafts removed, install a bolt with a nut and two large washers in the hub instead of the drive shaft (see fig. Installing a temporary bolt instead of the drive shaft in the front wheel hub).
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points.
1. Torque tighten the bolts securing the inner hinge of the drive shaft to the drive flange of the gearbox.
2. When installing the left joint with snap ring, replace the snap ring at the end of the drive shaft. Install the drive shaft into the differential, aligning the splines of the drive shaft with the grooves in the side gears of the differential. Insert the drive shaft into the gearbox until it stops.
3. Align the splines of the drive shaft with the slots in the hub and insert the drive shaft into the hub.
4. Pour oil into the gearbox.
